Mr. Turkey’s fat today. Gobble, gobble, gobble, gobble, gobble! I hope you got a piece of that song in your homes! I loved this week. Rehearsing the story of the beginnings of the first Thanksgiving always gives me a thrill. By the end of the week, here’s how the children told it:

Cannon: They were pilgrims.
Graham: The king told them what to do.
Eli: They had to go to a new place!
Eve: They didn’t want the king to tell them what to do.
Eli: They say, “No! I don’t want to!”
Lily: They got on a boat because they wanted to do their own stuff.
Cannon: It was the Sunflower! I mean, the Mayflower!
Adelle: It was a boat that would hold a lot of people…everyone!
Ellie: The Mayflower was bigger than a house.
Makayla: There were no houses!
Clyde: They made houses with wood.
Smith: No stores!
Kyree: No houses there!
Ruby: No food there!
Leisel: They chopped down trees.
Ben: No house.
Nathan: They built a house.
Ellie: And they made hospitals, too!
Mrs. McClure: Think so?
Ellie: Yah, ‘cause people were sick on the Mayflower and some of the people died.
Stella: House.
Lily: The pilgrims didn’t know how to make plants grow.
Kaylee: They were so hungry!
Lily: The Indians were watching them.
Cannon: They put fish in the seeds!
Makayla: Rain can happen.
Clive: They planted pomegranates!
Charlotte: Corn!
Graham: The Indians helped them plant food.
Cannon: The corn started to grow.
Adelle: They had so much food!
Sherry: They wanted to share.
Cannon: The 99 braves came.
Lily: And the chief made 100 Indians!
Eli: I’m the bravest boy you’ve ever seen!
Mrs. McClure: Then, what happened?
Grant: Let’s just read it! COME ON!
Sadie: They had a feast.
Hadley: It was a Thanksgiving.
Eve: They prayed.
Graham: It was a feast because of the Indians.
Grant: They put the turkey in jail.
Ben: Someone shot it.
Clive: You did it wrong! Not in Jail!
Grace: They shot the turkeys.
Ben: It was the Indians.
Leisel: They shoot-ted the turkeys.
Cannon: They had a lot of food and they were happy.
Adelle: We have Thanksgiving to make the world happy and fun.
While donning their costumes:
Kinzie: (Jumping up and down) This is the best day ever!
Eli broke out in song, “I get to be an Indian! Yah, yah, yah, yah!
(Filling her plate) Avery: This is the best feast ever!
So fun.
Best line of the week by Cannon:
Mrs. McClure smells pretty. I smelled her.
